Unveiling, and a question (or six)

Remember when I decided to unveil my scrapbooking blog? Well, that was a bust. I mean, I still update it, but knowing myself, I will never be able to really keep it up. I have hardly scrapped in the last few months, and don't see myself doing it really regularly at least until October.

So, because I'm totally insane, I've decided (at the urging of many friends and family) to start doing a little more with photography. I've put up a photography website---well, blog, since it's free---and I need your feedback.

Go look here: photographybylara.blogspot.com Then, please answer the following questions:

1. Does it make sense? Can you figure out how to find the photo galleries, the session and pricing information and all that stuff?

2. Do you like how it looks? If you hate it, do you have suggestions?

3. Do you think the pictures are worthy? You can click on all of them to see them a bit larger. (I'll be adding more gradually, I've just been pretty swamped. I've been making this website for nearly a week now.)

4. Would you hire me to photograph your kids/family?

5. How much would you pay me for a session? (You may notice that I do not have pricing information up yet. Because I have no clue what to charge.)

6. Please vote in the poll on the top of the sidebar about your preferred method of purchasing prints.

That's a lot of questions. Hopefully I'll get lots of answers!

(And in case you're wondering, I'm hoping to do only 1 or 2 sessions per month, and probably not any this month. I can do a bit more once Fiddler on the Roof is finished since that is taking up about 6 hours a week right now.)

  1. K, my one suggestion, and you can hate me if you want... I'd pick different photos for your header... I don't think those are the photos you want to speak for your business... which is what a haeder will do.
Hate me, really, no it's fine.
The rest of it I LOVE and YES I want to take my picture.
When can I book you? :)

  2. 1. Yes, it makes sense. I didn't have a problem locating anything.

    2. Yes, I like how it looks... except... I agree with Hilary. Though, I think the picture of Sophia has possibilities. It's just one of those "cute/funny" photos. I like the other pictures too... but they don't seem quite right for what you are doing.

    3. All gallery pictures are great.

    4. Yes, I would hire you. Too bad you don't live closer.

    5. Money... uh... well... I dunno. We don't have much money so I guess I'm not a good person to ask. I loves me a good bargain -- a really good bargain. But that's not really good for you... and maybe not fair either. Sorry. :(

    6. Hm, I really love the CD idea. But double the session price seems a bit much to me. (Well, it depends on what the session price is, I guess...). I tend to like a la carte better... but maybe would go with a package depending on what was included and the price. What would be the advantage of purchasing my prints from you -- rather than just printing them myself from the CD?

  3. I like the ones in the header, think the baby one in the middle is just about *perfect* except for the chair. The chair makes it kind of look like a candid/opportunity knocked so I took it kind of shot instead of something you'd be setting up professionally.

Take what I have to say with a grain of salt bec. I've had very, very few prof. pics done of my kids, but if I ***were*** looking to have it done, I'd be specifically looking for why this would be different than getting them done at Pennys or Olan Mills or whatever so I'd be looking for something special like that middle photo. I think more pictures in the different categories & I wouldn't repeat (like when I clicked children and siblings, some of the pictures were the same). Other than that the site is GREAT!!!!!!

  4. Okay - I LOVE what you've put up there so far! I do agree that maybe using more "staged" photos for your header would work better.

I like the idea of being able to have the CD and pick and choose the prints/sizes I wanted - although double the session price seems quite steep.

I found all of the galleries very easily and enjoyed the range of photos featured in each. I think you are incredibly talented and would definately hire you to photograph our family!

When we had our photos done a couple of years ago, the girl charged us a $75 sitting fee for 2 hours of photography and then the proofing of the photos. That price also included a small print package (one 8x10, two 5x7, and 4 wallets) of our favorite photo. The other prints we ordered from her were very reasonable in price.

That was a couple of years ago. I don't know what her pricing scale is now. One thing to think about with pricing is that we do live in Utah where families tend to be very thrifty (read "cheap!"). You definately don't want to undercharge, but if your prices are *too* high, people will look elsewhere.

Good luck with this venture - I think you'll be great! :O)

  5. I think your pictures are amazing. I wish we lived closer!! We are actually looking around right now to have family pictures taken. Here's what I have found, and it's about average:

    $50 sitting fee
Cd = $100 (includes 10 pictures) $10 every image after that.

    $100 sitting fee
    5x7 $15
    8x10 $25
    wallets $15 (set of 8)
    wall prints 50-100

Both of these I think are 1 hour sessions.

I think it's reasonable. They are paying for your time and talent. If people are looking for cheap then they can go to target or walmart. That's just my opinion. . .

Oh the navigation on your site is just fine. Easy to follow. I love your work. The newborn pictures are wonderful!!

  6. I have a question for you. When I buy a cd from someone with my pictures on it, where is the best place to have those printed?

  7. I love it! Those pictures of Leah turned out soooo cute!

    1. Made perfect sense.

    2. I'm a red fan, so that's great. Oh, I love your logo. Seems like new windows popped up for each gallery click, so by the end I had a lot of open windows. I usually prefer to just have one or two open windows for each site.

    3. I really liked the pictures, but I could be slightly biased.

    4. Already did, and I'd do it again (probably will for family pictures once J can acutally sit up).

    5. This is a tough one. I haven't checked with other places around here, but that'd probably be a good way to go. Some sessions might not take very long, but then you probably spend a lot of time afterwards working on the photos, so . . .

    6. As far as prints go, I'm the type of person that digital pictures stay digital. So, it'd be easier for me to get prints through you--then they'd actually get done.

  8. 1. The layout is great and easy to follow.

    2. I do like the look of it. I think the header you have of the little girls feet is more "artsy" and shows your photographic vision.

    3. I think they are great. You have a good eye.

    4. I wish I lived near you. I have a hard time finding great photographers.

    5. I would "shop" around and find out other's prices. People usually ask for what they think their talent and time is worth. You should do the same.

    6. Maybe many options should be available. Everyone has their own favorite way of getting things done. For me it would really depend on the outcome of the session and the purpose. i.e. birthday verses family pics or pic for christmas cards.

You are talented I really enjoyed veiwing your Gallery.

  9. Hi Lara, it's me again. (can you tell that i haven't had internet in a while?)

Love the site, colors, easy layout (thanks to blogger)& pics are grrreat! Love the headshots of the kids!

I would & will use you for pics.

Like the pricing for the images on CD, personally, though i have purchased the session/prints in the past.

My personal opinion is to shop around, but price conservatively to build your business. You can always raise you're prices later as your portfolio & experience grows. (IE: hair stylists etc.)

I have seen alot of very new photographers base their pricing off of the industry medium right out of the gate.

    Great work, Lara.
