The worst job ever

Most household chores give me a sense of accomplishment. When I vacuum, I see all the crumbs and whatnot left by my three messy ones come up, and a clean floor instead. When I make the beds, obviously it makes a huge aesthetic difference to the room. Cleaning just about anything gives great fulfillment (unless it was already sparkly clean to begin with...but who does that?). Even folding the laundry, which I procrastinate as long as possible, makes me feel good when it's all done.

But there's one job that never gives me any fulfillment.

Unloading the dishwasher. I open it up and spend several minutes putting everything back just where it goes. And then I close it again.

And yet, after all that work, my kitchen still looks exactly the same. Which means it is obviously somewhat messy, because the whole reason for unloading the clean dishes is to make room for the dirty ones. Yet, somehow, unloading the diswasher makes the task of cleaning the kitchen seem that much more overwhelming.

Maybe I'm just weird that way, though.

What job doesn't give you any fulfillment? Inquiring minds want to know.

  1. I'm with you on the dishwasher unloading- especially here in Pittsburgh where the humidity stops the dishes from air drying. Even after running the heated dry cycle I have to towel dry everything so it won't grow mold. And when I procrastinate for a couple days the dishes are still wet!

Having kids only further complicates the dishwasher dilemma because rather than just the usual cups, plates and bowls you get to mess with sippy cup parts and all manner of small items. Plus the dishwasher has to be run twice as often. Oh the joys :)

  2. My least favorite household chore is washing dishes by hand. The water always makes my fingernails soft!

  5. MIne is putting up folded clothes! I don't know why but I detest this! I don't mind washing or even folding them but I hate putting them up! LUCKILY, my dh is the laundry guru at my house so seldom does the time come that I have to worry about it, but when I do, I still hate it!

  6. Bria and Micah actually like unloading the dishwasher...so... aside from the breakables, I let them unload. Or, I use the excuse that I'm not supposed to bend (I've been contracting a TON). Works like a charm:) I pretty much hate cleaning out junk drawers/cupboards, paying bills, or shredding documents. Everything else I can handle now cuz I'm nesting:)

  7. It's funny you should mention this, because Morgan was just teasing me last night about my aversion to unloading the dishwasher. I really hate it! I would rather scrub greasy pots and pans (just not dry them and put them away)!

I also get little to no fulfillment from putting clean clothes away. I don't know what it is about putting things away . . .

  9. I don't like unloading the dishwasher either, but when it's all done--which takes about four minutes--I think, "Why do I always put this off?" My solution has been to have Ryanna be the official dishwasher unloader and she loves the job. Plus, it gives her a chance to earn some change, which we are going to be counting to help her learn her math better.
I also, like your friend Angie, hate, hate, hate putting away folded clothes. I think it's because it seems like there's all these specific places that certain articles go. Irritating.

  10. This made me laugh! That is also my least favorite household job/duty. Luckily about 80% of the time, Hank unloads it in the morning before he goes to work because he knows I despise it. Makes for such a happy day. I actually love loading it though. Everything looks so clean once the dirty dishes are put away.

  11. Cleaning the Toilets! Can't stand it.. put it off until I can't stand it even more.. and to top that off it is very unfulfilling for me. I absolutely hate cleaning the bathroom especially toilets. I'll take dishes or emptying the dishwasher over that any day.

  12. I like unloading the dishwasher because it doesn't require getting my hands wet or messy. I guess it doesn't help that I let my dishes pile up until they are a wet, smelly, dried on mess. Maybe if I didn't, I would enjoy loading it more....

  14. Can I just vote for any cleaning-related tasks?! I use to not like unloading the dishwasher, but now I have J & J unload the dishwasher, unless I need it unloaded during the day while they're gone.

I hate mopping the floor. I don't know why. It doesn't take that long and I like it afterwards. I just put it off as long as possible. I sweep multiple times a day, but mopping? Yuck! I also hate cleaning the blinds and avoid it as long as possible.
