On the third day of Christmas, tradition gave to me:
Three joyful stockings

I bought these three stockings while I was pregnant with Bria. She was born in October, so I am pretty sure I bought them when Christmas merchandise first showed its face in the store aisles. I thought they were adorable. And then I bought the JOY stocking hangers on the day after Thanksgiving. I remember being so thrilled to find them at Target because I had been lusting over similar ones in the Pottery Barn Catalog that were way beyond my meager budget.

I still love these stockings, but I sure wish I had had the foresight to buy 5 or 6 of them instead of three. It worked for a while, but I have never updated the darn stockings, because I need them to match. Every year I look for something that might work, and I suppose I am just too picky, because I never succeed.

When Chloe came along, Joel and I just shared a stocking. When Sophia appeared, Joel and I just dispensed with having a stocking altogether. (Actually, we have some ugly ones that we fill for each other on Christmas morning, but they don't get to be displayed. They're ugly.)

I think this is the last year that these particular stockings will be used. I saw some that I fell in love with, and I think they'll be easy to make. So, I'll do that for next year. Maybe. If I even remember. Perhaps I should start now.

And I might even be able to find some stocking hangers that say PEACE, too. We shall see.

And, I have a winner for the candle giveaway! No pictures of the drawing this time, so you'll just have to trust me that Annette from Four Girls and a Burly Man is the winner! Congratulations Annette!

  1. I do love your stockings but you need new ones so that you and Joel can have one too.

  2. Aren't stockings fun when they match? We have some that are knitted that I love. Very cute! That picture looks like something out of a catalog.

  3. As usual, your photography is beautiful, as are your stockings hung on the mantle with care.

  4. I have the PEACE stocking holders from Target from 2006 Christmas clearance! I was looking for it for several years, but could never snag one during the clearance madness after. As for the stockings, I guess I didn't care much for them; my mother-in-law kept on adding on their fireplace until 2001. It was such a hoot to see all the stockings hanging up crowded and full. That's when I gave in and when I found the PEACE holders in 2006, I was sold 100% on the idea. :)

  6. I've got Target holders too. They spell, "NOEL," and then I bought two snowflakes to flank the sides so there would be enough for the 6 of us.

    Gorgeous stockings.

And wait a second--you said next year there wouldn't be enough. Is that an announcement?

I won! I am so excited!

Love those stockings. Thats when I decided to go for the eclectic look. Of course thats how my entire life is. I try to pass my craziness off as eclectic!

  10. So cute! I Love those word stocking holders too. Can you believe how expensive stocking holders are. It is crazy.

One year when I only had one baby I found some pretty stockings after Christmas 70% off and I snatched up six, just in case. My girls don't care for them much.

Last year I bought new cutsy ones (they have santas, snowmen, reindeers etc on them) from cracker barrel. I hang mine up in the house, but use theirs on Christmas morning.

  12. Our stockings are the same way. I was smart enough to buy extras so this year Addysen has my last one. As soon as we have another baby...in a few years, I'll have to buy new ones.

Love yours! It always stinks when you find stockings you really love and have to replace them

  13. They look great!

We have a fireplace, but no mantle. I was thinking yesterday that I want to check to see how much it would cost to have one built. I would love to be able to buy cute stocking holders.

  14. I too have been lusting over the Pottery Barn stockings but I love our stocking and can't bear to replace them.

    Beautiful photo as always.
BTW you need a stocking for yourself and your hubby.

  15. Look at ballard Designs. They're expensive, but if you find what you like, then you can look around for comparable ones. I DROOL at that catalog every time it comes. Also, look at (dare I say it) Pottery Barn online after Christmas to see what they've got on clearance. 9/10 of all my Pottery Barn stuff came from Clearance (except the shower curtain in the frog bathroom. But sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do!). Let me know if you find anything you like in Ballard. I suspect you will. ;-)

  16. We have the joy stocking hangers but when our family grew we got a silver Christmas tree to go with it. Then we grew some more and got 3 silver reindeer to go with them. I think we are done with 7. thanks for writing on my blog, you are sweet. What a cute family you have too.

  18. I like the stockings, but you definitely need some for the whole family. And since aesthetics please you, I hope you find something that works for next year!

  19. I'm stalking for stocking holders post Christmas as well. At our old house, I just used push pins in our mantle. Kind of ghetto, eh?

  20. We just have three hand me down stockings. They don't match (at all) and I planned on making some last year. Didn't happen, and still hasn't. I do have some stocking holders, but I was pretty sure Jonas would just pull on the stockings and get knocked out by the holder. So, no stockings on display for us. :)

  21. I love your stockings, and I love that you are going to make the next set...that is such a fun thing to do. I went through a stage when my husband was Ward Mission leader where I made stockings for all the missionaries that served in our ward...can't do that anymore, but it was so fun!
    :D
