My name is Lara, and I am addicted to lipstick

It's genetic I think.

Some of my fondest memories of my grandma include watching her put her bright pink lipstick on after eating. You'll never catch my mom without it, or her sister. My female cousins are pretty into the lipstick, too. And then there's my own daughters, always wanting to wear it before they even turn a year old. Yeah. We are lipstick people.

Being a lipstick addict, you can't help but notice the difference between the stuff you can buy at the grocery store and the good stuff. I kind of prefer the good stuff. Okay, true confessions: I will only wear the good stuff unless it's Halloween and I need a strange color of lipstick to be Elphaba.

Problem. The good stuff is expensive. So very expensive that it can run as much as 50 dollars a tube. I may be a lipstick snob, but I am also a cheapskate. So, my solution is to buy the good stuff on eBay. I know! It's absolutely amazing the prices I have found there for my favorite lip color. Of course, I am lucky that my personal fave, the one I wear daily, was once featured in one of Estee Lauder's free gifts, and that helps me get it for even cheaper. I've been known to get three tubes for 10 dollars before. Usually I spend around 6 dollars a tube, just about what I'd spend at the grocery store for the cheap stuff. So it all works out in the end.

A lot of these make-up sellers on eBay offer their merchandise in lots, so I try to buy it that way as much as possible to save on shipping. Three tubes will last me about 6 months.

So, if you don't have the moolah to spend at the department store cosmetics counters, (or, if you're like me, and you don't even have a cosmetics counter in town) try eBay!

You're welcome.

  1. Great tip! I feel naked without lipstick, too (lipstick and mascara), but I have found a cheap (and I mean SUPER cheap, not Maybelline cheap) brand that I prefer over all others I've tried. We're talking Wet 'n Wild cheap. But it's a Polish brand, I think. And I love it.

(I'm writing about make-up soon too, after reading Stephanie's post about it recently. Make-up mania is taking over the bloggosphere! Or at least three people are writing about it, anyway.

  2. Yes it is true. I have noticed those who wear lipstick and those who don't. I wear it on Sundays and that is about it.

  3. I'm like Kate. I usually only wear it on Sundays. Though I have found a few colored glosses that I love and wear more often than lipstick.

  4. I should wear lipstick more often, actually. It always gives me a little boost in confidence. Is that lame? well...it does. Great tip. :)

  5. I don't wear lipstick--ever. But Natural Ice chapstick--that's what I'm talking about!!

  6. I agree with the genetic thing. My brother was always trying to sneak it on when he was little, just like his older sisters. However, I don't look good in lipstick. I'm thinking it's a good thing after reading how much the "good" stuff costs. Whew!

  7. I wear make-up. Have to. I think it sometimes matters how you grow up. My grandma NEVER let anyone see her without make-up. My mom wore it daily. I am pretty much the same way. It takes a LONG time to look naturally beautiful. (wink) I guess that is just the Southern Belle in me.

I never thought about buying makeup on Ebay. I may have to spend some of the the morning doing some price matching. Thank you.

  8. I've never really liked lipstick on myself, but maybe it's because I've only ever had the cheap stuff! Thanks for the tip!

  9. I am a total lipstick whore too! If I'm just around the house, I won't wear it, but I always have to have something on my lips, and I have Lip Smackers all over the house.

The eBay tip is a great one! I love Clinique lipstick.

  10. hmmm, I haven't had a decent lipstick in a long time. I did have one lip-gloss that I LOVED that was a high-end gloss that lasted forever, even through meals, but i can't find it anywhere now. My husband thinks I spend a whole lot more on lipstick than I do. Probably 20 dollars a year TOPS, but I'm pretty sure he thinks i spend hundreds. its so silly.

  11. OK, I'm checking out ebay. I hate wearing makeup from the grocery store. The stuff at the mall is SO much better. I love Estee Lauder and Prescriptives, but I've had to go elsewhere because of cost. Thanks Lara!!

  12. Thanks for the tip! I'm not a lipstick gal myself. It makes me feel a bit like a hooker. Perhaps I've not yet found my perfect shade? :)

  13. I'm more of a chapstick girl - but I've always wanted to be a lipstick lady. I think I don't choose the right colors? At any rate, I'll take the advice!

  14. Lipstick and Opera.
Sometimes I wonder how we're friends...

  15. I'm all for the good stuff, too. Sephora has racked up many, many dollars from my credit card... thanks for the ebay tip!

  16. I love lipstick too but have had a heck of time finding ones that don't totally dry my lips out. The last few years I've had to get used to naked lips because I just couldn't stand it. Probably because I am also cheap. I love the idea of buying it on ebay--now I just need to find the right shade so I know what to look for. Thanks for the tip.

  17. Come to think of it, I've never seen you without lipstick, so now I know why...

As for me, I rarely use make-up that most go to waste and get replaced years in between from sheer neglect or misplacement. But I do love Estee Lauder; anyone who can come up with a scent that makes my hubby go nuts, makes a lifetime customer out of me. I'm stocked up on Beautiful! :-D

  19. Lara! How funny to find you via Mormon Mommie Blogs! It's bindersbee from the Pea board. Or rather formerly of the Peaboard.

Anyway, I also love all things lippy. I make my own lip butters/ lip sticks and that's REALLY fun. I'll be doing them with our Achievement Days girls soon. I'll bet your girls would love to do that. There's a place in your town that sells a premade base- I'm happy to tell you where if you want to know.

  20. I love the lipstick too! It is crucial to how I feel about my look for the day. :)

  21. I've been getting those $1 tubes from the store and wondering why EVERY color looks horrible on me...hmmm...I just can't figure it out :D I love this tip-thanks!

  22. I wear makeup up but have never worn much lipstick except on special occasions. My ex-husband would never kiss me when I had it on. Guess that's why he is the Ex :) I do wear a lot of chapstick. You always look great!

  23. Yes-You are quite the lipstick girl! Always perfect lipstick.

I have probably 100 tubes of MAC lipstick (maybe 25 of Estee Lauder), but I have become a gloss girl.

(I got to hug my brother today!! Yay!)

  24. Lipstick on e-bay? Genius! Clinique Pink Chocolate, here I come!

  25. So should we add this to our list of 12 step groups? I have to admit, I have a whole drawer in the bathroom of lipstick, and it's all the good stuff. Of course, I can't remember the last time I put lipstick on seeing as I have not ventured out of my house in a while, but when I do, my lips will look FABULOUS!!

Also, glad you got the coupon. Wow, it took over a week to get to you. I knew the Los Alamso post office was a black hole, but a week to go to Utah...really people!

  26. I believe this to be a genetic trait also. I love the stuff!

  27. I'm addicted to chapstick. Lipstick (probably cause I've only used the cheap kind) always makes my lips so dry. My current favorite kind is Blistex (the original kind in the green-ish blue tube/container that says Medicated Balm SPF 15). Seems weird that it's medicated since it doesn't do that stinging thing that other medicated stuff does. Perhaps the medicated is just telling you that it is making your lips addicted. :)

  28. I love Ebay for things like this. I am always falling for Bath and Body Works products that they discontinue. But, I can find them on Ebay.

  29. I'm obsessed with lip gloss, so the good news is -- I can stand the cheap stuff. Bad news, I don't think I own a tube of lipstick.
