Portrait of the (somewhat dorky looking) seamstress wearing her apron

Friday was a big day for me.

Among other things, I did my taxes and I made my very first apron.

My friend Paige started it. She is always posting these great aprons that she either makes or receives in the mail in apron swaps. Finally I couldn't take it anymore and decided I was just going to have to join in on the apronny fun. So, I went to Walmart (I have mentioned that I don't have anywhere else to go, right?) and found an apron pattern that looked both cute and not-too-difficult-for-a-first-timer. Then it sat around on my craft desk for a few weeks.

Then I bought some fabric. Which also sat around on my craft desk. But only for a few days.

Friday night, I thought I'd just cut it out. Then I figured what the heck? I'll start sewing a bit. And then three hours later I was all finished. And I am now the owner of a really fabulous apron.

What do you think? (Since I took this picture, I figured out that I should tighten the neck straps a bit more and it looks better that way. I am too lazy to take another picture. Deal with it.)

The pocket is my favorite part. The button came out of my big bag o' buttons. Always nice when one works with a project so perfectly, isn't it?

Anyway, I knew I'd be hooked. So, I'll be making more. Just need to go fabric shopping...

  2. When you said "not-too-difficult-for-a-first-timer" I was thinking a rectangle with straps. This is awesome!

  3. I LOVE it. You did such a great job. How did you find time??? I guess I will just have to wait to do something like that when I have more time. Very cute.

  5. it is WAY cute, love the fabrics you chose, and the pattern is adorable. I've wanted to do one of those apron swap things but I just can't ever get my butt up to sew, which I enjoy doing, but not with kids running around.

  6. That would be so fun to cook in! But, uhh. Yeah. WAY out of my sewing league! e

  8. Who knew walmart had such cute fabric?!? Super cute apron, you have inspired me, I really ought to sew one myself. So I served my mission in Florianopolis, Brazil. What about you?

  9. OK, Lara, here's what you do: You take the kids to a sitter for Saturday night - you know, the big V-day. And you put together a special dinner for you and your valentine (I'm going to assume that's your husband, tee hee).

And you serve it wearing nothing but that sexy apron.

You could call it your "This Ain't June Cleaver's Apron" night of romance.

Clearly, I need to get out more.

  16. DarlinG! I love the fabric and color combo! Ok, with that much on, you shouldn't see any spills on you at all but the apron, right?

    :-)

Great job, Lara! I can't sew to save my life so I'm always in awe of those that can, including my dh!

  21. Sounds like you feel the same way about Wal-Mart that I do, wish we had more options here closer than a 45 minute drive! Love the pattern you used, my favorite aprons are the full coverage ones (because I make a huge mess of myself in the kitchen)

  26. I wish I could sew. My mom was a whiz at this stuff, but God gave me sons and, let's face it, they require less skills like sewing. Thank goodness! This is so so cute. I would love one of these aprons! Selling 'em?

  27. You are so talented! See I was happy that I did the taxes, but I didn't think to make an apron too! You have set the bar very high Lara :) It turned out so cute!

  30. The apron is so lovely, I almost got sucked into the "not-too-difficult-for-a-first-timer" line. Unfortunately, I just know from past experience(s) that would be just setting myself up for disappointing failure. Maybe in my next life, I will return as the Domestic Goddess.

  31. That's like a sexy apron--how is that possible? I've been hearing the bubbling call of a project like this. This inspires me even more.

  36. Love, love, LOVE it! So darling... I caught the bug a little while ago, too, and have bought about 5 different apron patterns over the past little while (all on sale for 99 cents, of course). I've only had the chance to make 1 so far, but I'm hoping to work on more, when life isn't so crazy.

  37. That is a great apron! My favorite is the top half. I've never seen one with a "halter top" look to it. You look fabulous and not one bit of a dork! (I love your hair)
