Being an adult: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

The Good: You get to have your very own car. You can drive it where you want, when you want. It's wonderful!

The Bad: You have a monthly car payment. Or you did, until you paid it off.

The Ugly: When said paid-off car decides to break down to the tune of $1500 dollars in repairs, you have to pay for it. Or go without a car.

  4. Oh crap! I HATE that. We've had to sink quite a bit of cash into my van this year too. Fortunately it's been a few smaller repairs instead of a big one like that. Yowza!

  6. No kidding--there are definite perks to the whole adulthood thing, but plenty of draw backs too. Good luck.

  7. my kids complain (well, ONE kid complains) that adults can eat whatever they want. Well, that's true. But adults need to make good choices without any help or they end up 20 pounds overweight. That's how I see it. So yeah, good and bad. And potentially ugly.

  8. Sorry this happened! We just had to put $900 into Tony's old '85 jeep and
I'm not sure the thing is even worth that much, but we really need 2 cars (even though really it seems like we have 1 1/2 :)

  10. What a nightmare! Usually being an adult rocks, but sometimes it just bites.

  11. That stinks. And it's not like you guys live close enough to town to walk or ride bikes places.

  12. This is the story of my life! I hate cars. Spencer just broke down a few weeks ago. The towing bill alone was expensive. Good luck.

  13. Cars leave scars. In the checkbook sometimes. Sorry.

  14. That is horrible! We bought a Hyundai with the 100,000 mile warranty on it. They make it sound like it's bumper to bumper and this really great warranty, but it's not.

  15. Yeah. So fun. Our 10-yr-old minivan nearly died last summer. It was one repair after another. ARGH!

  16. OH MAN!!! I hate car troubles... We seem to have a lot of them. Still, a paid off car with occasional problems is better than a monthly car payment. At least, I think it is...

  17. That happened to us with our civic- the second month without a payment we forked out 600 bucks for new brakes...3 months later an entirely new transmission- $2400!!

Sometimes I think having a car payment isn't such a bad thing!

  18. It's the ol' new car versus the paid off car conundrum. Our car has been paid off for about three years and has had its share of tuneful repairs, but in the end, it's still cheaper than making a payment on a new car. So far. . . .Still, it stinks, big time!

  20. Oh, I'm so sorry! What are you going to do?

  21. Ugh. Responsibility is way over-rated.

  22. Is that car worth 1500 bucks?
    Good luck to you.

  23. First I let out a bark of ironic laughter - and then felt my eyes well up.

    SO sorry!

  24. I hope you get it fixed soon...

  25. Aren't cars just so darn frustrating? Can't just walk 29 miles to work everyday, but you can't live with them either? You know, I have the same relationship with food I think. Frustration.

  26. The came thing happen to us. I feel for you.

  27. That's just terrible. Adulthood can really stink sometimes. What are you going to do?

  28. BLECH!!! I swear we're going to have a car payment for the rest of our life. Every time we're almost done, we need a brand new car to fit everyone.
