Me and the Gym

So, I joined the gym last week.  Even though I have an exercise bike upstairs, and myriad work-out DVDs, not to mention Netflix, I am always too distracted by laundry, dishes or blogging to actually get my butt up there and do it.  And, if I do manage to get up there, I usually quit early to clean the toy room, since that's where the TV and exercise bike are.

It really wasn't working for me and my distractable nature.

So now, I am a bona fide member of SNAP fitness.  And I've been every day but Sunday and today, which is the day I teach 7 lessons at the university.  I figure two days off is all right.

And I'm already feeling like I want to exercise, which is a totally crazy and completely foreign feeling in my world.  I am actually looking forward to getting up and going.  Now, of course I don't make it there until about 9:00 am, thanks to The Maestro's late teaching schedule this semester.  If I had to go at the crack of dawn, it would be unlikely that I would be excited about it and even more unlikely that I'd go. Joel doesn't mind staying home with Sophia until I get back, but that could all change next semester and I might have to go earlier.

Except, WAIT!  Sophia will be in KINDERGARTEN.  (Please tell me it isn't true.) I'll be able to go when I want.  Phewsh!

Anyway, while I won't be running any marathons soon, hopefully I will be happier with myself.  I fully realize that I haven't taken care of me in the last several years as I have worked hard to take care of everyone else around me.  And while my first thought is that going to the gym is not how I pictured taking care of myself--not like a good book and some hot chocolate, for instance--it is what needs to happen.

While it will be nice (really, really, really nice) if I lose some weight out of this venture, I'm trying to focus solely on my well-being.  Exercise, as it turns out, really is good for depression and energy.  Who knew?

Although, (as it turns out), it is also very bad for blogging.

Sorry about that...

Coming up soon:  "How a Wild Belizian Baboon Pooped on My Head".  Yes. It really happened.  And as soon as I get the pictures edited I'll tell you all about it.

And, also, I have a fabulous giveaway over at my review blog:  Check it out

Finally, I have a coupon code good for the entire month of February at eShakti.com, just for my readers:  Click here for more information

  1. I love you Lara! Hope that you continue to love your gym experience. I just discovered free Zumba and Yoga classes in my Stake. Going this week isn't panning out so far with Zoie's health, but I have high hopes for next week!

  2. Exercise is the reason I haven't been blogging much of late. But it's worth it. If your gym has a Zumba class, you should go. You'll never turn back!

  3. Ha! Isn't this funny--I HAVE a membership, but don't go all that much because I do have to go early in the morning. I'm in a frame of mind now where I think 'If only I had an elliptical at home then I would exercise more'. I wonder what the likelihood of that is? But kudos to you for getting out there, girlfriend!

  4. It's great to get back into the exercising groove, isn't it? I'm totally digging Zumba, and I even enjoy walking the treadmill. Particularly since I got my Kindle for Christmas, which is the perfect size for those machines!

  5. Good for you for exercising! And doing it for the reason that you want to take care of yourself. I'm working on taking care of myself too, just not in an exercise manner :)

  7. I joined a gym two weeks ago and have loved it. I'm kicking myself for waiting so long!

I can't believe how I've started looking forward to going.

  8. Yep, I have been thinking that I need to do the same thing. I can always find a reason not to exercise at the house. It is harder when you are doing it with other people.

  9. I haven't hit the gym in over a year. I know I need to, because you are so right- very good for depression and energy. Thanks for the reminder.

  11. I need to get back to the gym. I kinda miss working out. And I've regained most of the weight I lost 2 years ago now- most of the regain in the last 5 months. Sad. Depressing. So good for you for getting the habit going again! I need to follow suit.

And just because I need to say it somewhere but can't say it on MY blog, the other night my Mom told me that my hair looks bad (it's long and she hates long hair) and that the new work clothes I felt good about myself in look 'cheap'. Then followed it up with "If your Mother can't tell you, who can?" I just blew it off at the time but coupled with the weight regain, it's making me feel pretty bad tonight. I wish I'd have said "Actually, my Mom CAN'T tell me that- especially while wearing a sequined snowman sweatshirt!"

  12. Absolutely agreed that exercise is terrible for blogging. I only have so much free time in a day, you know? Good for you going though. I'm with you... nothing makes me feel better overall.

  14. Lara, I'm both proud of you and inspired by you! I have been SO unmotivated, and your post carries the helpful reminder that this is wonderful for my overall well-being! *sigh* I guess I'd better get at it again. Thank you! :)

  15. I love the gym. I too look forward to going each day. It has been a great source of strength in more ways than physically.

  17. For me exercising is kind of the opposite of blogging. (not going to expand, it's just a thought)

I'm happy for you to have "discovered" exercise in the way that I really hope to discover it one day. I am doing better about spending my 7 minutes (seriously. it's better than nothing) every morning since I realized that I actually CAN do it AFTER breakfast. But not on mornings like this when I ate pancakes, stopped and did other things and then went back and ate more pancakes before i realized I hadn't exercised. . .

  19. Ugh! I struggle getting to the gym but after I do go there I always think, "that was good why is it so hard to get here?"

Good for you on your new exercise routine!

  21. Well, this post makes me WANT to go back to the gym. Now if I can just find the time...

And now I will go to eShakti so I can get even more motivation to head to the gym:)

  22. I'm back to trying to exercise again! And it is bad for blogging. But as far as stress goes - I seem to have an abundance of that so I sure do it hope it helps.

  23. Good for you! Do you think you really will try a marathon sometime? It is a fantasy of mine....not you running, of course, but me...oh. You know what I mean! LOL
