"I'm starting a new diet tomorrow."
Perhaps, when we were first married, this proclamation from my husband would have elicited more excitement. Or at least a glance up from the book I was reading.
But not this time.
I hear those six words just about every Sunday night, after Joel has eaten one too many of the delicious cookies or brownies or whatever he made for our traditional Sunday treat. He always vows to eat perfectly "starting tomorrow" and he usually only makes it until Monday night when he insists upon making yet another yummy treat for Family Home Evening.
Sometimes he even makes it until Tuesday.
And once, he made it for months and lost 40 pounds.
You never really know what might happen with a diet and one's willpower, but I do know this:
Every Monday without fail my husband will start a diet.
Some might say it isn't good enough, but I think even one day of eating well has to be better than none.
Right?

Joel is hilarious! Wish him luck with his new diet!
ReplyDeleteThis is true. This is the first time that Mike has ever been on a diet more than one day. Good luck to Joel
ReplyDeleteSounds a bit like me and exercise. I went six or seven years straight with regular, 5-6 times a week exercise. And then fell of the wagon and swear that each week I'll get back on it. And sometimes I do for a day or two.
ReplyDeleteDo we have the same husband and just don't know it?
ReplyDeleteHear, hear!! :) I can't believe you let your husband bake! Actually, I'd probably love it if Greg did, but I love baking so much that we'd just have twice as many treats around. :)
ReplyDeleteSo funny to hear this from a guy! My husband is the same way about recommitting to exercise regularly, but he is so naturally slim that it never really stares him in the face, like his wife! LOL
ReplyDeleteThat is so cute of him. Good luck with it all.
ReplyDeleteMy husband never cares about dieting EVER! He really should, because he is a healthcare provider and he should practice what he preaches (uh....me too!). Luckily he is starting to sell a new diet system in his office and he has to do it. He will be showing before and after pictures. (which mortifies me a little, lol!) I really feel he needs to do it for his health. I have to remind him he is in NOT in his twenties anymore. He is forever young in his heart though.
ReplyDeleteI think we all do that to some extent, and I am cheering Joel on! You can do it! After all he has to try to keep up with the ever beautiful Lara right? Weird side note, thinking about weight and a conductor brought up this memory. This one conductor we had at Davis Concert hall in A.K. was about one hundred pounds overweight and after getting all fired up with the 1812 overture he broke through the stand. It was one of the strangest evenings I ever spent at a concert. He was a really good sport about it though.
ReplyDeletehehe!! It must be a man thing--mine will do the same thing.
ReplyDeleteSunday dinner and FHE treats are the bane of my existance too. Every single week they roll aroundand just beg for something extra rich and delectabke. So I hardly ever make them any more. Poor kids :(
ReplyDeleteLara, I just love how you post, I always either laugh, think or cry, ok sometimes, all three! LOL
ReplyDeleteRead you comment over at Ann's blog- thank you so much.
Joel is me. I'm pretty sure I'm the world record holder for "most consecutive days of starting a diet in the morning and then eating my weight in chocolate by noon."
ReplyDeleteYou crack me up.
Of course it is!!! Of course, I diet the same way, so I have to say that.
ReplyDeleteI've started way too many Monday diets lately. But this time I mean it!
ReplyDeleteRight. And reassuring to hear that things at your house are just like they are at ours.
ReplyDelete:~D
I personally start a new diet every day:)
ReplyDeleteThat sounds eerily similar to my workout regimen. Hmmm.
ReplyDeleteThis kind of reminds me of taking the sacrament. I take it on Sunday, and vow to be perfect - er, better - this week. By Monday I realize I have sinned yet again, and Sunday I vow to do better again.
ReplyDeleteFunny Joel!
That sounds like me except I normally only make it until Monday after breakfast...if I have any hidden chocolate in the cupboard. If not sometimes I hold out until FHE treat time ;)
ReplyDeleteThat is freaking hilarious! Maybe it would be more encouraging for him to think of it as renewing his resolve every week...but then it wouldn't be so funny!
ReplyDeleteWe're also a household of weekly renewed resolve—building shelving, finishing knitting projects, starting that art project I've been wanting to do, etc. We always get around to what we want to do eventually...but it usually takes about 467 weeks of stating our intentions first. Sigh.
Here's to that new diet, or new whatever, that'll start one of these Mondays!
I am going to lose like 15 pounds this week.
ReplyDeletePERIOD.
I am totally going to do it too.
Ah yes. Mine too :) (the husband, that is.)
ReplyDeleteHahahahahahahahahahahha! Joel is halarious! Well, say that on tuesday then too. Maybe it will go two days.
ReplyDeleteJoel sounds a lot like me. I too suffer from a sweet tooth and lack of boundaries with sweets, but I've been doing lots and lots better the last couple months. Hopefully he can do it!
ReplyDeleteFunny! I start mine every month instead of every week. I rarely make it past day 4. Too bad it's only the thought that counts when you're talking about gift giving and not when you're talking about getting in shape.
ReplyDeleteI'm very much like him. But I just don't say it out loud. I think it to myself as I lay in bed every night.
ReplyDeleteI love this post! It makes me laugh and maybe I love it because I can so relate. I'm usually really good in the morning and by 2 pm I'm ready to BINGE! Last night I wanted something super sweet -- despite already having lunch at Cheesecake Factory -- and Dustin made me chew gum.
ReplyDeleteOf course, right! ;) You have to start somewhere; at least Joel keeps starting.
