Eleven Candles

So, back in March, Chloe turned 11.

Did you read that right? Yes. ELEVEN. I put almost an entire package of birthday candles on her cake this year.

She's starting middle school next year, people. How has my life come to this?

Lucky for me, she is just an absolute delight. She is as creative as ever and is constantly doing new and surprising creative things. Most recently she's been in the kitchen doing some experiments with her Easter candy. She melted down her Cadbury egg in the microwave and then stirred it all together and spread it on toast.

She's super generous, too, because she let everyone who wanted to try that toast. It tasted kind of like spreading Nutella on toast, if you ask me. Just a lot more labor intensive.

Her birthday this year came right in the throes of opera rehearsals. She was writing out her guest list for her birthday party one day and having a difficult time keeping it to the limit of 8 girls that I had set. Ever the social butterfly, she had started with about 20 girls. I think she saw the stress in my eyes and she put down her pen and said, "I think I'll just have Eva this year. We can do something fun just the two of us for my birthday."

That's just the kind of girl she is. If she sees that someone else is unhappy or stressed out, she will do whatever it takes to help that person feel better. In this case, she offered to have a birthday celebration that would be easier on my schedule. She knew I couldn't handle having a bunch of girls over and planning a big party. It brings tears to my eyes to think of her generosity this way. I asked her many times if she was sure, and she wouldn't budge.

So, we had a really fun birthday celebration one Saturday with her BFF. We saw a movie, went out to eat at Chloe's favorite restaurant, got Shamrock Shakes (because that's the best part of having a March birthday!), and had a lot of fun laughing and being together. I appreciated that she was really laid-back about the fact that we had to wait until about two weeks after her actual birthday to have her fun day. But Chloe is pretty darn laid-back (except when she isn't).

Her big gift from The Maestro and I was an American Girl Kitchen set. Only it wasn't made by American Girl, it was this one from Target. She had seen it online and fallen in love with it. I know this is probably the last year that she'll want to really play with her beloved American Girl Dolls, so we got it for her.

And she has played with it, a lot. Just the other day, she decided to make American Girl sized cookies. She used the mixing bowls and measuring cups from the set and put in the recipe in American Girl measurements. She cut down the butter into what looked like just the right size. We did have some trouble with the egg, but she figured it out. Then she baked them up (on a real cookie sheet--not the plastic one from the set!), and they were both adorable and yummy. Just like her.

I love this girl.

Happy 11th, Chloe! I'm so glad you're mine.
