Here's the irony--while I'm a total grammar nerd, I accept that language is changing. I'm a stickler in making sure my grammar is correct is published works because someone, somewhere will know what's "right" and think I'm wrong.

It's sort of like making sure you dress up and speak like an educated person for a job interview--you wouldn't use slang there. It's a matter being taken seriously in certain situations. So if I hear a family member at a get-together use lay/lie incorrectly, I don't get all twitchy.

In another generation or two, many rules (especially lie/lay) will be gone altogether, but it's worth knowing what's considered standard in the meantime.

For now, I'll often rewrite a sentence to avoid the "correct" rule because it sounds so clunky but I don't want to look "wrong." Example: whom. Almost no one uses it anymore, but you won't see me using WHO in that sense. I'll just rephrase the whole thing.

That said, my two personal peeves, which I know are both dying out but I can't quite give it up, are 1) imply/infer and b) nauseous/nauseated.

(This book is TOTALLY up my alley, as you know!)

Just one grammar pet peeve? (Sorry, I think I am a grammar snob....) A favorite one: when someone answers the phone and they say, "Yes, this is him" (instead of "he"). Also, some of the aforementioned: you're/your/, it's/its (I really get frustrated with that one--can't people just read it out loud and figure out if their sentence should read "it is vs. its", and then put the apostrophe in accordingly? I really despise too much use of the passive voice. Not that there is anything grammatically wrong there, but it really bugs (sorry, President Monson!). And I'm such a snob when it comes to misspelled words, it's not even funny. And here's my BIGGEST one: when people use the word "heigth" instead of "height" (I'm sure because the words 'depth' and 'length' have a th on the end, so people must think that 'height' should also. I will acknowledge, though, that I often don't know when to use lay vs. lie. Or sometimes the use of "I" in a sentence. So I should really knock off this snobby grammatical arrogance of mine!

Yay for linguistics minors!!! :)

And I'm glad you don't hate French.

I will have to see if OUR little library happens to have any books by this author. It sounds fascinating.

Loose/Lose. That one always bothers me. Also, as unpopular as this may be -- I have never cared for the frequently used expression of "love me some". Sorry!

Your/you're. Their/there/they're. It's/its. Quiet/quite. Were/we're. Plus all the text speak in email and, well, text messages. I use LOL....but when someone just puts "Y", you don't know if they are saying yes or why. I am a total spelling snob, so all that really bothers me. And ending a sentence in a preposition? You totally have to use the phrase, but people probably do not even know what that means anymore.

Ooh reading all the grammar pet peeves in the comments makes me shudder - I'm a stickler for correct spelling/word use! But I think I'd really enjoy this book as well because I'm all about the evolution of language (provided it evolves in a direction I like ... LOL).

Thanks for being a part of the tour.
